Symposium: "Poetry is an Island": Walcott's topographies

On the occasion of Derek Walcott's 85th Birthday

21.05.2015 at 19:00  – 23.05.2015 at 15:00

The symposium "Poetry is an Island: Walcott's topographies" is hosted by the Department of Anglistics and American Studies in collaboration with the IDP MIMESIS.

"In celebration of Walcott’s 85th birthday, this symposium aims to present different approaches towards Caribbean space and its poetic topographies. His textual productions in poetry, drama and theory go beyond the familiar construction of spaces of alterity; in his poetic worlds the Caribbean is never merely Europe’s counter-space or heterotopia that needs re-writing or writing-back. On the contrary, Walcott constructs an emancipated textual Caribbean in its own right.Walcott’s poetry explores spatial constellations of the Americas, Europe and Africa; it questions homogenizing ideas of origin, identity, nation and culture and investigates Walcott’s poetological as well as poetic answers. "

There will be a screening of Ida Does’s award-winning documentary “Poetry is an Island” (2013).
